/Sot-to-vòl-to/ An open passage dedicated to public transit beneath the houses and palazzi of Venice in order to cope with the limited space offered by the lagoon city, the sottovolto or sottoportico is undoubtedly an unmistakeable aspect of Venetian architecture, whose creation goes back to the origins of the Most Serene Republic. The oldest? Possibly the 13th- century sottovolto of Corte Seconda del Milion, near the ancient foundations of Marco Polo's houses, very near Rialto.
